JOB DESCRIPTION
Position: GED Basic Skills Instructor
Responsible to: Director of Operations-Kern County
FLSA Status: Non-exempt (40 hours per week)
General Purpose:
Responsible for the implementations of Basic skills, GED and ESL Curriculum to target customers in the CalWORKS program at Vida Scott Center. Classroom instruction should be interactive and incorporate a variety of teaching techniques, materials, and resources, always keeping in mind the ultimate goal of
the students’ success on the GED exam.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Provide classroom instruction in one or more of the following areas: match reading, writing, science and social studies;
- Responsible to provide daily instruction of English as a second language class;
- Assess English proficiency of each student and design individual study plans designed to lead to 8th grade level English reading and writing proficiency;
- Assess reading and math proficiency through individual testing of students, and develop individual study plans to achieve, at minimum, 8th grade reading and math skills;
- Pretest students on GED examination to assess current grade level knowledge, and develop individual study plans designed to lead to successful passage of GED examination;
Develop, revise, and evaluate curriculum to meet the needs of the program or student;
Evaluate and track students’ academic progress, using proper assessment tools;
Help students with improving their critical thinking, problem-solving, information processing and communication skills;
Organize and maintain class area, including equipment and materials;
Display a positive attitude with all students and staff, act as support team member in a collaborative environment;
Work closely with project director and appropriate DHS staff to recruit customers and prepare required monthly progress reports;
Maintains safe, secure, and healthy educational environment by establishing, following, and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with MAOF and program regulations;
Ensures documentation meets all required organizational and contractual guidelines;
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Completion of two years college education or appropriate teaching experience required;
- Minimum 2 years teaching experience required;
- High School Diploma or GED required;
- Ability to effectively communicate and relate to persons of diverse socio-economic backgrounds;
- Ability to communicate in an effective manner, English fluency.
- Must have knowledge of computer skills (Microsoft Office, Excel and Power Point).
- Standard oral and written communication skills;
Pre-employment physical and negative T.B. test or chest x-rays;
- Must be fingerprinted and cleared through the Department of Justice;
- Must possess own vehicle at all times, a valid California Driver’s License and automobile insurance.
