Pediatrics
To assist the medical provider with physical examinations, carry out nursing treatments and perform other health care procedures according to provider's orders. Must develop working knowledge of clinic policies and procedures. Assist patients with medication assistance programs. The Medical Assistant must establish good public and working relationships. Maintains good understanding of program and agency safety and infection control to comply with OSHA and JCAHO standards.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Completes patient intakes - takes, records, and reports vital signs, history, height and weight of patients.
- Administers screening tests and records results.
- Administers medications and treatments ordered by the provider.
- Checks the exam rooms to ensure the equipment is functioning properly, the supplies are re-stocked as needed and materials are disposed of appropriately. Cleans room and equipment as necessary.
- Assists provider in specialized examinations and treatments/procedures as directed.
- Performs venipuncture as ordered by the provider and assists Phlebotomist as needed.
- Follows up lab results and cultures with providers and patients.
- Keeps and maintains the inventory for the supply room.
- Coordinates immunizations of children using the health department data and administers immunizations as indicated.
- Reviews patient charts on a daily basis in order to assure quality control of documented medical entries.
- Assists the Medical Service Worker in registering and scheduling of patients.
- Assists in maintaining daily logs for immunizations, hepatitis, pregnancy test and other lab procedures.
- Abides by infection control policies and procedures as dictated in the Centro del Barrio Infection Control Manual.
- Abides by policies and procedures on hazardous materials as dictated in the Employee Safety Handbook.
- Participates in the agency’s Quality Improvement Program.
- Abides by all safety policies as dictated in the Employee Safety Manual.
- Demonstrates competence with patients aged 0 and older.
- Demonstrates excellent attendance and punctuality.
- Perform all other duties assigned by the clinic manager that are in keeping with the philosophy, purpose, goals, and objectives of the program and the agency.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
Performance will be evaluated by the clinic manager with input from the provider using the Performance Evaluation CDB Form # 1006c (1/00) wherein a satisfactory overall rating is considered a minimum acceptable. The Medical Assistant shall be responsible to the provider for all work related to medical functions.
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent and MA certification
Experience:
- Minimum of 6 months recent experience in clinic or hospital setting.
- Knowledge of HIV, hearing and vision screening tests (preferred).
Other:
- Bilingual/Bicultural Spanish required.
- CPR Certification required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Must be able to meet the attendance requirements of the position.
- Must not pose a threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
- Physical ability to lift up to 20 pounds unassisted.
