Position Title: OB Nurse

Department: Clinical

Supervisor: Director of Nursing

Directs: The perinatal nurse will be responsible for managing the care of women throughout their pregnancy and shortly thereafter, as well as assisting in the provision of family planning education prior to a woman becoming pregnant.

FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary Range:

Charles Drew Health Center, Inc. (CDHC) strives to pay its workforce at the midlevel or 50% of the industry and market baseline salary

range. For new hires, we offer pay at less than the 50% mark to allow for growth. CDHC offers a generous employee benefit package. The

combination of the pay and benefits results in a total compensation package in the 70% of the competitive salary range.

POSITION SUMMARY

The OB Nurse will provide specialized care and education to women, infants and their families from the onset of pregnancy through the 1st month of the newborn’s life. The OB Nurse will educate pregnant women about their unborn child, teach them how to have a healthy pregnancy and teach them relaxation techniques to help with stressful times during pregnancy. The OB Nurse will also teach family members how they can be supportive to the patient during pregnancy. The OB Nurse will work closely with the medical Provider to monitor the status of the mother and baby, assess the progression of the pregnancy, support the family, foster the new mother-infant relationship after delivery, teach parenting skills, assess and support the mother post-partum and provision of education regarding family planning for the future. The

OB nurse will establish positive relations with delivery hospitals by ensuring perinatal records are forwarded in a timely manner before delivery and facilitating discharges and coordinating post-partum and newborn follow-up visits, after delivery. The OB Nurse will be responsible for tracking OB data required for submission in our annual UDS report and maintaining an up-to-date database that monitors and tracks OB statistics necessary to ensure quality care for our OB patients. The OB Nurse will also need to be able to work with women having fertility issues, experiencing miscarriages and women who may experience a fetal demise. A final important responsibility for the OB Nurse is to encourage efforts that educate our patients and the community on the importance of seeking early prenatal care and family planning, in order to prevent unwanted pregnancies and to promote healthy pregnancies for those desiring to become pregnant.

POSITION-SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Co-manages Perinatal services with Perinatal Providers by providing patient education, clinical support and coordination of services for patients enrolled in the perinatal program (OBNV, lab work, scheduling U/S, referrals for High Risk, F/U on non-compliant patients, ensuring PP visits and newborn F/U visits, etc.)
  • Be available to assist the Provider during routine OB visits, nexplanon and IUD insertions and/or removals, OB ultra sounds and colposcopies.
  • Maintains and certifies the completeness and accuracy of OB records (lab results documented, US reports received, referrals completed, etc.).
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with delivery hospitals (faxing OB records, assisting with discharge, obtaining delivery records and monthly personal visits).
  • Assist patients in identifying a provider for their newborn, prior to the delivery; make sure delivery hospital is aware of parent(s) choice.
  • Provide support to assigned Providers (triaging phone calls, medication refills, patient follow-up, and completion of in-box tasks).
  • Provide appropriate education for OB patients testing positive for an STI.
  • Direct the CDHC Perinatal Incentive program; maintain adequate supply, maintain budget and coordinate distribution and pick-up of incentives with our patients.
  • Assists with marketing perinatal services to the community and community agencies, including health fairs, attendance at public events promoting Perinatal Health and participation in community meetings and/or committees that deal with perinatal issues.
  • Establish collaborative relationships with other organizations, such as Omaha Health Start, that strive to decrease infant mortality via educational programs for pregnant women and women and children after pregnancy.
  • Participate in professional development activities in order to keep current with trends and best practices in the area of OB care.
  • Tracks perinatal data and submits a monthly report to Supervisor. Also will assist the Finance department with validation and submission of perinatal UDS data at the end of each year.
  • Develop and effectively manage program timelines to ensure timely completion of program deliverables and submission of monthly clinical reports.
  • Lead performance improvement activities specific for this program. Develop criteria to measure outcomes, assists in the analysis of data for quality improvement, interprets study results, identifies limitations and barriers and recommends alternatives that will augment the quality of care being provided to our OB patients.
  • Active participation in designated clinic meetings to assist with improving patient health outcomes (PIP, Joint Commission, CHP, etc.)
  • Performs all duties in compliance with all federal and state regulations.

EXPECTATIONS:

  • Recruit and increase the number of active patients in the OB database to maintain an average of 70 patients.
  • Implement processes to promote early entry into prenatal care; goal is that 78% of women will initiate prenatal care during the 1st trimester.
  • Implement processes to promote healthy birth weights; our goal is that < 7.8% of all of our newborn weights will be < 2500 grams.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required.
  • 1-2 years’ experience in Maternal Health preferred.
  • 1-2 years’ experience in a Program Manager role desirable.
  • High level of knowledge of scope of practice for the RN, LPN and MA.
  • Demonstrated mastery of critical thinking, analytics, and problem solving skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate effectively with individuals at various levels both inside and outside of the organization, often in sensitive situations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office – particularly Excel and PowerPoint; familiarity with an Electronic Practice Management (EPM) and/ or Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills both written and verbal, as well as, exhibiting strong organizational skills and work ethic.
  • Demonstrates a professional demeanor when responding to patients/customers.
  • Hearing - must be able to respond to telephone calls and face to face interactions. Near vision - to type on computer.
  • Hours of Work: Monday-Friday 8:30 – 5:30, 9:00 – 6:00. Expect to work 40 hour a week minimum.
  • Travel: Some travel required.
