CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE

Michael Baker International’s Construction Services staff supports clients by acting as their trusted on-site agent through all phases of construction, from pre-design to close-out, by providing qualified construction managers, inspectors, constructability reviewers, schedulers, estimators and safety experts. As new technologies evolve throughout the construction industry, innovative ideas are required to maintain and deliver successful construction projects.

DESCRIPTION

This position will support large-scale program delivery managed by Michael Baker International from the Alexandria, VA office. The Project Accountant will be responsible for providing high-level financial analysis on a portfolio of infrastructure projects through their life cycle (design and construction) and must thoroughly understand the financial components of a project and proactively work with an internal management team in the monitoring of project performance, and reporting of financial metrics. Executing these duties across the overall program of projects will involve coordination among the owner, vendors, and public funding partners to assure reporting accuracy and proper tracking of expenditures. The Project Accountant will collect both individual project financial data as well as compile and summarize data on the overall status of the portfolio of projects as well as detail Michael Baker’s contract performance.

Specific responsibilities may include but not be limited to the following:

Collaborating with the program management team to develop/refine procedures to assess budget performance and spend forecasts for the various projects and overall program.

Reporting any financial risks and budgetary discrepancies to management for review.

Development of aging reports, performing double-entry bookkeeping, managing spend accounts, work-in-progress reporting, cost allocations across projects as directed.

Detailed review of multiple vendor invoices/pay applications, compiling and summarizing consolidated invoice packages for reimbursement.

Developing and maintaining strong relationships with vendors and suppliers to document comments, receipt of additional required documentation or application of appropriate collaborative corrections to resolve issues.

Becoming familiar with all project agreement requirements, pay rates, allowable charges, and tracking any exceptions.

Compliance reporting as directed, such as certified payroll, contract retainage, disadvantaged business participation, prompt payment terms, etc.

Support the program document control specialist in properly recording and filing in-progress and finalized project financial information.

Keeping abreast with both the applicable construction and accounting industry practices.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.

A minimum of 3 years of experience in private or public accounting.

A certification in construction accounting is preferred.

Excellent knowledge of construction cost accounting and related financial procedures.

Working knowledge of the construction industry.

Demonstrated familiarity with firm fixed fee and time and materials projects.

Solid analytical and mathematical skills.

Meticulous attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.

Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to multitask and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Computer skills (Microsoft Office, Adobe), with an Intermediate Level of experience in Excel a must and Oracle Accounting software experience preferred.

COMPENSATION
The salary range for this position is $56,886 - $118,527. This will be dependent on the experience and expertise of the incoming candidate.
