STATUS: Permanent / Full-Time (1.0 FTE)

SALARY: $9,152 per month at 1.0 FTE | SR22 | BU09

LOCATION: Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital – Kapa’a, Kaua’i, HI

This position is located in the Skilled Nursing/Long-Term Care Department of Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH). The HHSC Kaua’i Region includes Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital, SMMH, and the Kaua’i Region Clinics, which consist of The Clinic at Waimea, The Clinic at Port Allen, The Clinic at Kalaheo, The Specialty Clinic at Kalaheo, The Clinic/Urgent Care at Po’ipu, and The Clinic at Kapa’a. The HHSC Kaua’i Region is part of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC), a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i.

JOB FUNCTION: The Registered Professional Nurse (RPN) IV: LTC Support Coordinator serves as an assistant to the Director of Nursing-LTC in providing nursing care and treatment services as well as supervises and participates in managing the daily operations within the unit’s overall shifts; May be involved in planning and implementing in-service training programs for nurses and nursing assistants positions serving as clinical specialists, and providing direct service in complex nursing situations and demonstrating to the nursing staff new techniques and methods of patient care. The RPN IV also coordinates care with other disciplines; Provides care that meets the psychosocial, physical, and general aspects of care; Determines priorities of care based on the physical and psychosocial needs of patients, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system; Communicates with the ED physicians regarding changes in patient’s status, symptomatology and results of diagnostic studies; Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. The position is subject to rotating shift work, may be required to work holidays/weekends, and may be assigned to cover other nursing units as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.

Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.

Licensure: License to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawai’i. Applicants must submit evidence of current Hawai’i RN licensure (a copy of a valid license) at the time of appointment.

Experience: One and one half (1 1/2) years of professional work experience as an RPN

Select Certification: Must possess at least one year of professional nursing experience in Long Term Care Facility within the recent two (2) years. A minimum of six (6) months of Resident Assessment Coordinator experience is preferred.

Supervisory Aptitude: Applicants must have demonstrated possession of supervisory aptitude.

Supervisory Aptitude is the demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects; by serving as a group or team leader; previous work experience in a position that demonstrates or performs supervisory functions or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory or administrative capabilities exist; by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.

Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) & Advanced Care Life Support (ACLS) certifications are required upon the date of hire.

DESIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of: nursing theory and practice; nursing techniques and procedures; nursing literature and current trends and development in nursing; biological, physical, social, and medicinal sciences as related to nursing theory and practice; nursing techniques and procedures. Knowledge of JCAHO requirements, and those of other federal, state, or private regulatory/review organizations with which the hospital interacts.

Ability to: plan and schedule the work of others and utilize the principles and practices of supervision. The ability to apply nursing theory and practice in planning and giving nursing care; recognize, interpret and evaluate symptoms of a patient’s condition; and take appropriate action. The position should be able to initiate and maintain working relationships with members of the medical staff, administration, nursing, and other departments and agencies affiliated with the hospital.

Physical Requirements: Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.
