Position Description
Serves as Institutional Veterinarian for the Texas Tech University. Examines, diagnoses, and treats diseases of laboratory animals to ensure health of animals used in scientific research and to comply with regulations governing their humane and ethical treatment.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Ensure compliance with teaching and research requirements associated with USDA, IACUC, AAALAC, OLAW and DEA
  • Provide veterinary oversight and care for teaching/research animals
  • Work proactively and collaboratively with faculty and staff to attain and ensure compliance for the use of animals in research and teaching
  • Ensure compliance with SOPs for management of animals
  • Provide or facilitate training for new animal-care staff
  • Have experience with companion animals, horses, and cattle
  • Act as conduit where appropriate between the School in Amarillo and various TTU departments and offices in Lubbock
  • Communicate regularly with the Attending Veterinarian located in Lubbock
  • Serve as a voting committee member on the IACUC and the School VCSC (for client-owned animals)
  • Communicate effectively and constructively with the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) Attending Veterinarian relative to the use of the TTUHSC vivarium resources in Amarillo
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders
  • This position reports to the Dean

Required Qualifications
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent
  • Licensed to Practice Veterinary Medicine in the State of Texas
  • Fulfill requirements to carry a DEA license for controlled substances 2 to 5
  • USDA category 2 accreditation

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in academia- research and/or teaching
  • Experience with regulatory medicine
  • Candidates who have a successful track record of teamwork
  • Candidates with experience in medical education (human or veterinary)
