Staff Accountant
Remote within California, must reside in California, Some travel to Sacramento may be required.

We are seeking a Staff Accountant to join the Foundation in its mission of benefitting, supporting, and enhancing the California Community Colleges—the largest and most diverse system of higher education in the nation.
What You’ll Do
The Staff Accountant is responsible for routine financial transactions and performing month end close functions. This position manages tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger preparation, contract/grant reporting, financial reporting, year-end audit preparation and the support of budget and forecast activities.
What You Bring
- Manage assigned contracts, grants and/or fiscal sponsor relationships which includes, preparing monthly financial statements and/or invoices with supporting documentation, comparing expenses to contracted budgeted amounts for accuracy and variances within contract terms, and answering inquiries made by contract/grant managers and other personnel.
- Prepare budgets, analysis, and forecasts of assigned projects.
- Serve as principal liaison between Finance and major Foundation departments.
- Oversee the process of costing allocations to individual projects, grants, and contracts.
- Conduct revenue recognition of assigned contracts.
- As necessary, assist in managing and/or providing oversight for all Accounts Receivable and/or Accounts Payable functions.
- Assist in maintaining assigned monthly allocations of various expenses, such as: phones, internet service, postage, etc. and includes periodic review of methodology and monthly
- Complete bank account reconciliations as assigned on a daily/monthly basis.
- Complete balance sheet and income statement account reconciliations as assigned on a monthly basis.
- Assist with the annual audit process.
Attributes for Success
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) required.
- Knowledge of professional accounting systems required.
- Ability to interpret and apply accounting theory to transactions.
- Ability to work accurately with numerical detail and create useful management reports.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Grant reporting and payroll experience preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with Foundation employees at all levels, program and client staff, and consumers encountered in the course of work.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents.
- Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints and respond appropriately.
- Ability to effectively present information and answer questions for Foundation customers, partners, and management.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
- Passionate about providing students with stronger pathways to education and building a more just and equitable California overall.
- A self-starter and quick learner who is highly motivated and outcome-oriented, always seeking innovative approaches to project execution.
- A strategic and creative thinker who can problem-solve, working within and across teams to swiftly respond to needs identified across the California Community Colleges

- Ability to work on a fast-paced team and build and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
