Student Mentor
Position Overview:
Student Mentor provides direct support services to students in grades 10-12 to enhance learning experience and motivate students to pursue college or vocational training and graduate successfully. Student Mentor helps students to recognize and achieve their educational goals.
They help students to examine school programs and recognize their academic strengths.
Position Responsibilities:
- Collect, organize and analyze information about students through records, tests, and interviews characteristics for educational and vocational planning
- Provide guidance to students with educational, personal, career, social and emotional areas and make referrals as appropriate
- Attend teacher meetings and participate in the development and delivery of
Individualized Academic Educational Plans as required by the school
- Assist with providing group educational and/or vocational workshops
- Work with college and career center coordinators in assisting students with career exploration
- Make phone calls and home visits to parents/guardians as required
- Compile educational, occupational, and economic information to assist students with formulating and meeting objectives
- Conduct follow-up activities to evaluate student progress
- Recruit students for academic year through school presentations and parent contacts
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Candidates should possess a commitment to community service
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent skills
- 3 years of related experience
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
- Must have a car for work related travel
- Expertise applying best practices for working with youth, service coordination, and navigation models
- Strong and effective communication and networking skills with youth at the highest risk of violence involvement and with referral partners. For example, Chicago Police
Department, Cook County Probation and Court Services
- The building blocks for working with youth at the highest risk of violence involvement, but also incorporating youth voice throughout the process
- A mechanism to provide support for placed-based, community-based organizations to create a service delivery network
- Experience serving youth with the highest risk of violence involvement successfully with strong performance outcomes
- Demonstrated skills creating and implementing a comprehensive outreach strategy and plan
Salary and Benefits: This is a full time, permanent, career position. The salary is commensurate with experience. The agency benefit package includes health, life, and disability insurance, retirement plan, and bonus program.

The Agency: Greater West Town Community Development Project (GWTP)’s Youth Unit primarily consists of the West Town Academy (WTA), a highly effective, state-recognized diploma-granting high school for students who have dropped out of Chicago Public Schools and wish to complete their secondary education. 75% of our youth are African-American, and 25% are
Latino. Students range in age from 17-21 years of age. Most GWTP Youth Unit participants and
WTA students are from low-income families, and approximately 15% are DCFS wards.
The GWTP Youth Unit plays a critical role in the lives of both our students and their communities. The Youth Unit and the WTA strive to demonstrate highly successful strategies for re-engaging, teaching and graduating our community’s many dropout youth. Additionally, the Youth Unit and WTA serve as a model for civic and government leaders to encourage the creation and expansion of resources and programs that effectively address the needs of our community’s many at-risk and dropout youth.
