JOB
To organize, promote, instruct, supervise, and evaluate fee-based recreational Tiny Tot classes for preschool-age children and to perform related duties as assigned.PLEASE NOTE: This recruitment is for a part-time, non-benefited position limited to 919 hours of employment in a fiscal year (July 1 through June 30) with an average of less than 30 service hours per work week. Unclassified hourly employees are paid on an hourly or per diem basis and shall not be eligible for benefits nor be subject to Civil Service Rules. Although hourly employees are at-will, they are still subject to all other City policies and procedures.This recruitment is open until a sufficient number of applications are received and may close at any time without prior notice. Essential Functions: Functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: organize, promote and instruct a comprehensive activity program for children 3-5 years of age; provide an academic component to help prepare children for kindergarten; develop and implement an age-appropriate curriculum that fosters learning, motor development, socialization skills and positive self-esteem; monitor and supervise class participants at all times; monitor conditions of equipment and facilities; set up and take down various class related equipment; complete requisite reports and other documentation; collect various statistical data; maintain attendance records; interpret recreation programs for the public; develop interest and participation in the program through various means of publicity; make recommendations to the Recreation Supervisor regarding scheduling equipment needs, program content and changes; may train and oversee Tiny Tot Aides and volunteers; perform light custodial tasks; sweep floors, light mopping, wipe flat surfaces and empty trash; build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service; perform related duties as assigned.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Any combination of education and/or experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: twelve months of part-time experience teaching or assisting with organized group activities for children 3-5 years of age in a municipal, non-profit or commercial setting and educational units in child development or a closely related field are highly desirable. License or Certificate: possession of a valid California driver's license and American Red Cross certifications in First Aid and CPR must be attained within 90 days of hire.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of: basic objectives of recreational classes as they relate to pre-school age children; activities that develop motor and learning skills such as storytelling, arts and crafts, music, specialized games and physical activities; English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; computer equipment and software applications related to assignment. Ability to: make oral presentations to children 3-5 years of age and their parents; monitor and control participants; set up and inspect equipment; complete forms, reports and provide statistical information; work various schedules including mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, holidays and split shifts as required by the work assignment; operate computer equipment and software applications related to assignment; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; follow written and oral instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.Physical Demands and Working ConditionsOn a continuous basis, stand and walk while supervising participants; intermittently sit, bend, squat, kneel; reach above and below the shoulders; lift and carry supplies weighing up to 25 pounds; assist program participants weighing up to 50 pounds; perform routine custodial duties; verbal ability to communicate in person and by telephone; see in the normal vision range with or without correction; hear in the normal range with or without correction. Work is performed primarily indoors; indoor work is performed in a variety of environments with natural or artificial lighting and moderate to high noise levels. Work is frequently disrupted by the need to respond to in-person inquiries. The performance of outdoor work requires exposure to a variety of weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, intense sun); exposure to potentially hazardous substances and chemicals and work on slippery or uneven surfaces.
