Oldtimermuseum – Meßkirch (D)

Looking through the leaflets that I had acquired, and then trying to find the museum locations on the map, I discovered that after my visit to the museum in Schramberg, I was not far away from another museum, the Oldtimermuseum in Messkirch. It is fair to say that this one was quite a surprise, too, largely because it is very small. Located in the outbuildings of the castle in the small village of Messkirch, the museum was founded in 1993, and is only open on summer weekend afternoons. Quite unlike the “money almost no object” museums that many major manufacturers have now established, this one is a small collection of whatever the owner managed to source, crammed into a small space. There is a single line of cars on the ground floor, and then a display of old bikes and a couple of micro cars upstairs. That’s it! Several of the display cars are very rare, though and admission was only 3 Euros, though, so who can complain.

1929 Opel
1963 DKW F12/65
1970 Fiat 850 Coupe
1930 Hanomag 4/23
1958 Spatz Victoria
1952 Gutbrod Superior

Upstairs I found this literally unique car. of only 8 built, this is the only survivor: the mid 1950s Schako-Mobil. it mustered 12 PS from its 600cc engine, which allowed the brave to reach 80 km/h. It even had seating for 4. Not a commercial success, though.
An interesting and rather musty collection, worth seeking out if you are in the area, but probably too small to justify much of a special trip.

Parked up outside, probably purely coincidentally, was this rather nice restored Karmann Ghia.
